The airport was officially opened to the public on 25 May 1999. From 27 October 2024, Haikou Meilan International Airport in Haikou began operating a winter and spring flight schedule. A total of 98,934 take-offs and landings are scheduled, with an average of 642 flights per day, with 44 airlines flying Haikou passenger routes, and 181 routes including 161 domestic routes, 15 international and regional passenger routes and 5 international cargo routes, totalling 122 cities in operation.
