Sanya Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone
Photo Gallery:
The Nanshan Buddhist Cultural Park is located about 40 km southwest of downtown Sanya, on the southern coast of Hainan Island. It is one of China's most famous Buddhist parks and a popular city attraction.
The main highlight is the 108-metre-tall statue of the goddess Guanyin, standing directly in the sea. It is one of the tallest Guanyin statues in the world, unveiled in 2005. It features three faces looking in different directions and is considered a symbol of the city of Sanya.
The park also contains:
-
the Nanshan Temple;
-
the Hall of Thirty-Three Guanyins;
-
vegetarian restaurants and souvenir shops;
-
scenic gardens and viewing platforms with sea views.
The ancient Chinese saying "May your fortune be as boundless as the East Sea and your life as long as the Nanshan Mountains" reveals the long-standing connection between Nanshan and the culture of blessing for longevity, making it an ideal place for prayer and blessings.
Construction of the Sanya Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone began on 11 November 1995, and the scenic area officially opened to visitors in 1998. The 108-metre-tall Nanshan Guanyin Statue on the Sea was completed and consecrated in 2005.
