Embarking on a journey to Hainan Island often sparks the question: which bay is the ideal choice for a hotel stay? With a plethora of options available, deciphering the meaning behind their Chinese names can be a daunting task for first-time visitors. Fear not, as this article aims to unravel the charm of each popular destination, ensuring a tailored vacation experience just for you!
Nestled amidst the South China Sea, Hainan boasts a coastline adorned with numerous beaches and bays. Among them, Sanya stands out as the island's most beloved city, drawing tourists far and wide. Within Sanya, several bays reign supreme: Dadonghai, Sanyawan, Yalongwan, Xiaodonghai, Haitangwan, and Clear Water Bay. However, tucked away in quaint villages like Houhai and Maling (Hongtangwan), unique atmospheres await exploration. Let's delve into each one, shall we?
Beyond mere geography, these bays boast distinct personalities and attractions. So, before booking your Sanya getaway, let's embark on a brief overview of these coastal wonders!
Dadonghai
大东海

This bay - without exaggeration - was the most beloved by Russian tourists in the "pre-pandemic" times. Here you will encounter many signs in Russian.
The bay is rich not only in endless cafes and restaurants but also in shops and hotels. It is here that you can buy tea, souvenirs, and much more. It is in this bay that the famous Pineapple mall is located.

Dadonghai offers a diverse range of accommodations to suit every taste and budget, from cozy hostels to luxurious 5-star resorts. Nestled between two majestic mountains, this 4-kilometer stretch of shoreline boasts warmer water temperatures in winter compared to neighboring bays. Swimming areas are demarcated by buoys, ensuring safety for all beachgoers. However, post-pandemic efforts by local authorities have led to some changes along the coast. The sandy shoreline has widened, beachside bars have relocated to higher levels, and swimming zones have been slightly reduced for enhanced safety.
Dadonghai is evolving into a cleaner and more vibrant destination, with new establishments continuously emerging.
Dadonghai Beach is a bustling urban hub, perfect for those who thrive in vibrant atmospheres. However, if you prefer solitude, you might want to explore other bays nearby. Come daytime, the beach is alive with sun-worshippers and water sports enthusiasts soaking up the tropical vibes.
But the energy doesn't fade as the sun sets. Evenings at Dadonghai are a lively affair, with tourists unwinding after a day of sun and sea, gathering at beachside tables to sip on refreshing coconut drinks or something a bit stronger. Whether you crave excitement or relaxation, Dadonghai has something for everyone.
Xiadonghai
小东海

Nestled a mere ten minutes from the lively Dadonghai, Xiaodonghai is a quaint and cozy bay situated on the Banshan Bandao peninsula. Despite its small size, this bay offers a serene escape between two hills. Unlike its bustling neighbor, you won't find endless rows of tables and cafes here. Instead, you'll discover palm trees providing shade for a relaxing respite. With minimal waves, Xiaodonghai is ideal for a leisurely dip. However, be mindful of rocky and coral-laden areas underfoot; it's wise to wear appropriate footwear. Take note – if you're staying in another bay and can't go into the sea due to seasonal waves, try visiting Xiaodonghai – most likely you'll be able to swim there.
This bay is particularly beloved by photographers because of the abundance of locations, as there's the sea, sandy beach, palm trees, greenery, and boats. Besides photographers, it's a favorite spot for locals who love to come here to relax in the shade of the palms.

With just three hotels dotting the coastline, complemented by quaint cafes and even a brewery, this destination promises an intimate retreat. Venture to the nearby peninsula, where a European-style street beckons for photo-worthy moments, alongside a picturesque yacht club. For enthusiasts of vibrant photography, these locales offer the perfect backdrop for striking snapshots!
Sanya wan (Sanya bay)
三亚湾

Nestled along the coast, this bay is renowned for its endless 22-kilometer beach stretch. And oh, the sunsets here are nothing short of spectacular, making it a haven for sunset photography enthusiasts.
It's the perfect spot for leisurely strolls along the shoreline. The sand is wonderfully compact, which means besides walking, you can easily hop on a bicycle for a seaside ride. How romantic does that sound?
But wait, there's more! Thanks to this unique feature, you can indulge in some sandcastle building fun with the kids. It's the ultimate beach bonding experience! Sometimes, you might notice that the water here has a slightly grayish hue – but fret not, because the water is crystal clear! It's all thanks to the texture of the local sand, which seems to "suspend" within the water.
The coastline is quite expansive, so even during the busiest hours, you'll still feel surprisingly spacious. Along the beach, palm trees are planted, providing shade for loungers. Just keep in mind that there might be a fee for using loungers that don't belong to your hotel.
In the mornings, you'll encounter yoga enthusiasts practicing by the shore, while evenings in Sanya Bay transform into a hub of tourist activity. And it's no wonder – after witnessing breathtaking sunsets, you can marvel at the evening illumination of the ultra-modern buildings on Phoenix Island.
Phoenix Island is a marvel of modern engineering, an artificial island built on former shallows and connected to the bay by a sleek highway bridge. Its futuristic skyscrapers make a striking impression by day, but it's when twilight falls that the real magic happens – vibrant lights dance across the skyline, creating a mesmerizing spectacle.
The bay's infrastructure is incredibly developed, essentially encompassing much of what constitutes the city of Sanya. Hotels line the streets just a stone's throw away from the beach, though be mindful of the bustling traffic that accompanies this proximity. So, when selecting your accommodation, keep this in mind for a seamless vacation experience.

A must-visit spot in this bay is the First Market, where you can feast your senses on a cornucopia of seafood delicacies, local produce, and even pearls. Just across from Sanya's bustling pedestrian street, you'll find a myriad of food stalls offering tantalizing Asian cuisine at budget-friendly prices. And when night falls, don't miss the lively seafood markets, where you can sample freshly prepared seafood assortments right before your eyes.
It's a beach destination that truly comes alive from dawn till dusk, offering a blend of natural beauty and modern allure. So, prepare to be enchanted by the wonders of Sanya Bay!
Yalong wan (Yalong bay)
亚龙湾

The Yalong Bay Beach is hailed as one of the finest in all of Southeast Asia, making it an absolute must-visit destination!
Stretching over approximately 8 kilometers, this coastline is lined with hotels from some of the world's top hospitality brands. And let me tell you, it's not just the luxurious accommodations that draw visitors here.
With its pristine waters and powdery white sand, Yalong Bay offers a slice of paradise. The underwater visibility can reach an impressive 10 meters at times.
But it's not all about adventure – those seeking tranquility and comfort will find solace in the serene atmosphere of this bay. Whether you're looking for a family-friendly getaway or a romantic escape, Yalong Bay has something for everyone.

At each coastal hotel, you'll find your own slice of beach paradise complete with loungers, but don't worry – the beach itself is yours to explore freely.
Surrounded by towering mountains and tropical forests, the sea here is truly a sight to behold. For a stunning panoramic view of the bay, head to the glass bridge at the Tropical Paradise Park.
While Yalong Bay may not boast as many cafes and shops as Dadonghai, there are still several dining spots scattered around, along with a huge shopping center featuring outlets. Just keep in mind, prices here tend to be a bit higher than in other nearby bays.
This is the perfect destination for those who value prestige, top-notch service, and luxurious accommodations. So, if you're seeking a vacation filled with pampering and comfort, Yalong Bay is calling your name!
Haitang wan (Haitang bay)
海棠湾

"Haitanwan" translates from Chinese as "Begonia Bay."
With 25 kilometers of pristine white sand and azure sea! The bay is still actively developing, but already along the coast are situated the most prestigious complexes from 5 stars and... above! Yes, indeed, for example, the "Atlantis" resort has a 7-star status.

Unfortunately, swimming is prohibited in this bay due to numerous underwater currents. However, if you're staying at one of the hotels here, this fact might not put a damper on your spirits. That's because all the hotel complexes boast vast grounds, intricate pools, and even pools with seawater. Plus, there's the massive Atlantis Aquaventure water park – in short, a million opportunities to take a dip!
So, while you might not be able to dip your toes in the bay itself, the plethora of aquatic attractions within the hotel compounds ensures that water enthusiasts won't be disappointed.

Nestled within this bay lies one of the world's largest duty-free shopping centers (purchases are made using your passport and ticket, and you can collect your bought items only at the airport before your departure). Additionally, just a comfortable 15-minute sea journey away awaits the breathtaking Wuzhizhou Island and Water Entertainment Center (also known as "Pirate Island").
Clear water bay
清水湾

Located 60 km from Sanya's Phoenix International Airport, this bay falls more under the jurisdiction of Linshui County than the city of Sanya itself. The journey from the airport takes approximately an hour and a half by car.
Welcome to an introvert's paradise! This bay boasts truly crystal-clear waters (with visibility of up to 12 meters deep!) stretching for about 12 kilometers. The sea here has a gentle slope, warm and azure. The waves resemble those of the ocean - long and rolling, making it not ideal for deep diving enthusiasts but perfect for splashing around in the waves!
The beach is deserted, with very few people around. A beautiful pathway lines the beach - a meticulously landscaped garden adorned with a plethora of plants, flowers, and palm tree-lined alleys.
In the vicinity of this bay, you'll find condominiums, six beach resorts, golf courses, restaurants, and numerous villas. Local hotels generally provide all the necessary amenities, but you can also venture out to explore other places via taxi.

Another unique feature of this bay is its "singing" sand. Such a phenomenon is more commonly associated with deserts, but it occasionally occurs on beaches as well. While in deserts, the sand genuinely sings as it cascades down dunes in large sheets, on beaches, it whimsically chirps beneath your feet, which is also quite unusual.
Houhai
后海

The village of Houhai is a mecca for beginner surfers! Located 43 km from Sanya's Phoenix International Airport and 30 km from Dadonghai Bay, even if you don't plan on learning to surf, spending a day here to soak up the local atmosphere is definitely worth it.
The bay always has a small wave due to the unique features of the seabed, and this wave breaks at a very shallow depth, making it popular for surfing lessons even among children. In the village, you'll find a plethora of boutique hotels catering to every taste and budget, as well as cafes, coffee shops, bars, and surf schools.
Almost every hotel offers board rentals and a trainer who will explain all the theoretical knowledge, safety techniques, and skills needed to ride the waves. Whether you're a seasoned surfer or just dipping your toes into the world of surfing, Houhai promises an unforgettable experience amidst its laid-back coastal charm.

Before heading into the water, the main points will be demonstrated to you on the beach or the hotel terrace. If you look around, you might find English-speaking instructors, although they are fewer in number.
In the evening, the village comes alive with endless party lights. Music fills the air, and you can witness fire shows on the beach and so much more, leaving you with unforgettable memories of the festivities.
Hontang wan (Maling village)
红塘湾 (马岭社区)

The coastal village of Malin is nestled in Hongtang Bay—a relatively new name for visiting guests, as development in this area began shortly before the pandemic. The bay is conveniently located just 8 km from the airport.
The architecture of this village is characterized by uniformity, with white houses adorned with blue shutters, numerous trees, cozy beautiful balconies filled with flowers, wall paintings, and intriguing exterior designs. All of this seems to transport you to another dimension, with only the red Chinese lanterns swaying in the wind serving as a reminder that you are indeed in China.

The entire unique style, unusual for China, blends incredibly with the blue sky and azure sea, which is visible from every street in the village! The beach stretches quite far, with a gentle slope into the sea.
The first and second rows after the sea are entire streets lined with hotels and guesthouses of all kinds. There's a place to stay for every traveler here—whether you have simple tastes or prefer a more lavish vacation. Budget-friendly rooms are available, as well as rooms with panoramic views of the sea.
The village is full of cafes, coffee shops, bars, and places to rent water sports equipment, as well as photo studios.
In addition to the village itself, there's plenty to see nearby—the bay is conveniently located between the Nanshan Park and the End of the Earth Park, and you can even spot the statue of the goddess Guanyin from the shoreline! The distance to Nanshan Park is just 13 kilometers.

No matter which bay you choose to visit, you're guaranteed to be enchanted by the natural beauty and warm hospitality of Sanya.
So, pack your bags, embark on an unforgettable adventure, and discover the magic of these stunning coastal gems!
