Luhuitou Scenic Area
Photo Gallery:
Luhuitou Park ("The Deer Turns Its Head") is a free viewing area on a hilltop between Dadonghai and Sanya bays, about 15–20 minutes from Dadonghai. It is one of the best places to see the city from above and watch the sunset.
Luhuitou (鹿回头, Lù huí tóu) literally translates from Chinese as "The Deer Turns Its Head."
The park offers sea views on three sides, with Sanya Bay, Xiaodonghai Bay and Banshan Bandao Peninsula visible from here.
The park takes its name from a beautiful legend of the Li people: long ago, at the foot of Wuzhi Mountain, there lived a brave young hunter of the Li ethnic group. One day while hunting, he spotted a graceful sika deer and gave chase. He crossed mountains and rivers for nine days and nine nights until he reached a cliff on the shore of the South China Sea. With the vast ocean stretching ahead, the deer found nowhere to flee. As the hunter drew his bow and prepared to shoot, the deer suddenly turned its head. In a flash of divine light, it transformed into a beautiful Li maiden. The hunter fell in love with her at once, and the maiden returned his affection. They married, cultivated the land and raised their descendants here.
Since then, the mountain has been called Luhuitou Hill. The 15-metre-tall Luhuitou Sculpture at the summit was created based on this touching Li love legend.
Tip: This is a great spot for watching the sunset, so plan your time accordingly. In the evening, it's best to bring mosquito repellent. Entry to the park is free, but you will need your passport to get a ticket. We recommend paying for the electric cart to go up, so you save your energy for walking around the park.
