Treatment on Hainan Island — Taiji TCM Sanatorium

Treatment on Hainan Island — Taiji TCM Sanatorium

82

When people think of a holiday on Hainan Island, they usually picture endless turquoise waters, palm trees and golden sands. This tropical resort in southern China has long been celebrated as a slice of paradise for a beach getaway.

But Hainan and the city of Sanya are about more than just sun and sea. In recent years, a fast-growing draw for travellers from around the world has taken root here — traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

In China, TCM is not some esoteric practice or folk remedy, as many sceptics assume. Here, it is an official pillar of healthcare policy, requiring licences just like Western medicine. It is taught at state medical universities, practised in public hospitals alongside Western medicine, and prescribed by fully qualified, licensed doctors.

And while getting TCM treatment is a fairly everyday affair for Chinese patients, for visitors from other countries the priorities are different — they want highly skilled interpreters who know the specialised terminology, and the kind of service they are used to back home.

Here, in the bays of Sanya, a one-of-a-kind medical complex has been up and running for nearly two decades — the Taiji Traditional Chinese Medicine Sanatorium. It has become a genuine bridge between ancient Eastern philosophy of health and the modern expectations of travellers from Russia and the CIS. Over the years, the place has earned a reputation as Hainan's premier wellness "mecca", where centuries-old practices of acupuncture, herbal medicine and massage blend seamlessly with comfortable service tailored to the Russian-speaking guest.

What makes this medical centre so special? It is the only TCM centre in Sanya with its own branches in all the main resort bays — Dadonghai, Yalong Bay and Haitang Bay. That means guests can combine a full course of treatment with a holiday on the best beaches, without wasting time on long transfers. And best of all, you will be met by Russian-speaking interpreters and personal coordinators who will guide you through every procedure — no language barrier, and maximum comfort.

What's more, it is the only traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) centre in the whole of Sanya to boast its own dedicated laboratory for producing traditional herbal remedies, as well as its own storage facility for the ingredients.

Herbal granules and decoctions are prepared right on site — strictly to your attending doctor's prescription. Thanks to this, this is the only place where you will find a complete closed-loop cycle: from your visit and diagnosis, to the in-house production and packaging of your medicines — and all the way through to feeling great again.

In this article, we will take a closer look at how the Taiji medical centre helps people restore their health, why more than 10,000 patients a year choose it, and how ancient TCM practices help modern people find harmony of body and spirit right on the shores of the South China Sea.

The Taiji TCM medical centre in Hainan has been operating in the therapeutic, wellness, cosmetic and spa services market since 2006. Every year, Taiji welcomes over 10,000 patients from China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Europe.

Today, it has everything needed to organise a quality wellness holiday: highly qualified doctors of Chinese medicine and specialists with many years of experience. The level of service meets the highest standards, and comfortable treatment rooms and a welcoming atmosphere await you at every branch. Special attention is given to a personalised approach: Russian-speaking interpreters and personal consultant-managers accompany each patient through every stage of treatment. This centre doesn't just hand you a list of procedures — it puts together a comprehensive programme aimed at solving your specific health issues.

Alongside its therapeutic methods, you will be offered a vast range of cosmetic and spa treatments for complete recovery and relaxation.

Treatment in Sanya on Hainan Island has never been so accessible, so comfortable and, above all, so genuinely effective. The Taiji TCM medical centre is not just a clinic — it is a full-fledged wellness complex where centuries-old traditions of Eastern medicine meet a high standard of service. A VIP approach, tailored programmes and attention to every guest set it apart from other medical facilities in China.

The medical centre's work is rooted in the philosophy of traditional Chinese medicine, which is fundamentally different from Western medicine. While Western medicine tends to fight symptoms, Chinese medicine aims to restore the body's internal balance, thereby eliminating the root cause of the illness. That is where its main strength lies: treatment targets not a single organ, but the entire system as a whole.

Another key difference is the approach to medical specialisation. In Western medicine, doctors are divided into narrow fields: cardiologists, neurologists, gastroenterologists. Traditional Chinese medicine has no such division. Here, the body is seen as a single whole in which everything is interconnected. According to ancient philosophy, vital energy flows along meridians — special channels that link all the organs and systems. Along these channels lie biologically active points, each responsible for specific functions. It is by stimulating these points that TCM doctors carry out diagnosis and treatment, gently restoring health without surgery or aggressive drugs.

For guests from Russia and the CIS countries, this is especially valuable: here they don't just treat illnesses — they help people discover a new quality of life, understand their own body and learn to keep it in good shape. All of this takes place in a comfortable, almost resort-like setting, where looking after your health becomes a pleasant and natural extension of a holiday on the shores of the South China Sea.

The sanatorium's true pride is its doctors. All of them hold a specialised university degree in TCM (as we mentioned, traditional medicine in China stands on a par with Western medicine and has its own universities with multi-year training programmes). Each specialist has decades of hands-on experience behind them. Many are authors of research papers and publications on TCM. And yet the doctors don't simply prescribe herbal blends

and insert needles — they are perfectly capable of reading MRI, CT and ultrasound scans, and are well versed in anatomy and Western medicine. This integrated approach allows them to see the full picture of a patient's health.

What conditions can you come to the clinic with?

TCM is successfully used to treat cardiovascular diseases, gastrointestinal and urogenital disorders, musculoskeletal problems (including post-injury), as well as respiratory, skin and neurological conditions.

What sets the TCM approach at the Taiji medical centre apart is that treatment is always aimed not at suppressing symptoms, but at restoring the body's internal balance. That is precisely why patients come here with the widest range of complaints — and each one receives an individual programme drawn up with their lifestyle, age, chronic conditions and even emotional state in mind. After all, in Chinese medicine body and spirit are inseparable — and that is one of the main secrets behind its effectiveness.

Every appointment follows the same pattern: the doctor feels your pulse, takes your medical history and asks questions. They will ask about your daily routine, your complaints, and examine your tongue and skin. Having Russian-speaking interpreters on hand makes communication far easier — and this is exactly where the service at Taiji clinics stands out from ordinary TCM facilities.

After the examination, the doctor prescribes a treatment programme. Even for people with seemingly identical conditions, it can differ greatly — and in TCM practice that is perfectly normal. Alongside the procedures, you will be prescribed herbal infusions made to an individual formula. Herbal medicine holds a special place in the TCM treatment system. All across China, alongside ordinary pharmacies selling the pills we are used to, herbal pharmacies operate everywhere. There, your herbs will be blended and your decoctions prepared strictly to your attending doctor's prescription. Herbs work a little more slowly than the pills we are used to, but they have no side effects on other organs.

Main TCM treatment methods

Massage

Chinese massage is very different from what we are used to in our countries, or from the Thai massage many tourists know. Here, the focus is on the meridians, their intersection points and the pathways along which vital energy flows. This kind of massage helps relieve tension, improve circulation and restore the body's balance.

Foot massage is especially popular with guests. It doesn't actually begin with the feet, but with the neck and shoulder area — it is a deeply relaxing treatment that includes a foot bath with coconut milk and medicinal herbs. Then comes the foot massage itself, working on reflex points, which helps improve circulation, ease fatigue and promote overall relaxation.

Cupping massage with special vacuum cups speeds up the body's recovery. Incidentally, many of us remember it from childhood.

Gua sha massage is steadily gaining popularity beyond TCM clinics too, but we would still recommend trusting it only to specialists who genuinely know what they are doing. It is a technique using a special scraping tool that improves circulation and quickly relieves muscle tension.

At the Taiji sanatorium, you will also be offered a relaxing head massage, a therapeutic back massage, an abdominal massage that improves digestion, and an anti-cellulite massage that reduces puffiness.

Acupuncture and needling therapy

The best-known TCM procedure is acupuncture, or needling. There is no need to be afraid of it: the doctors at the Taiji sanatorium are true professionals in this field. The procedure is prescribed to relieve pain, restore energy balance and improve overall well-being. The needles are inserted into specific points in line with your individual treatment programme.

Another procedure known for its rapid effect is the needle-knife (acupotomy). Using a special fine instrument, it releases muscle adhesions and tension, improves joint mobility and reduces pain. Never have this procedure done at unlicensed clinics — it demands a skilled approach and extensive experience. Taiji's doctors will carry it out as effectively and safely as possible!

Fire-based procedures

Some TCM procedures use fire. Fire cupping, for example — where the vacuum in the cups is created using a flame. This helps stimulate the body's natural recovery processes.

Or the famous moxibustion (warming with mugwort). In fact, nothing is actually burned — smouldering mugwort (moxa) is used to apply heat to specific points. The procedure improves the flow of energy and strengthens the body's defences.

Spa treatments and self-care

Alongside its treatment programmes, the sanatorium offers a wide selection of spa treatments and self-care. If you have carelessly got sunburnt, there is a skin recovery treatment available. You can also have a medical pedicure and foot care. And much, much more.

The Taiji medical centre has been operating since 2006, and over the years it has become a genuine wellness "mecca" in Hainan. Thousands of patients from various countries have already entrusted it with their health — and returned home not only feeling better, but with a new understanding of what it means to be healthy and live in harmony with yourself. Among its patients are many well-known figures — artists, politicians, bloggers, athletes and even cosmonauts.

Here, traditional Chinese medicine reveals itself in all its depth: not as a set of exotic procedures, but as a holistic philosophy of life. The sanatorium's doctors don't simply eliminate symptoms — they help the body remember how to work properly, restoring its internal balance and setting its natural self-healing mechanisms in motion.

What is especially valuable for guests from Russia and the CIS countries is that this whole process takes place without any language barrier or cultural discomfort. Russian-speaking interpreters, personal coordinators, tailored programmes and, above all, genuine care make a stay at Taiji as comfortable and genuinely effective as possible.
